Dual Credit Courses at Belmont

Earn Credit for High School and College!

Dual credit classes are held at Belmont. You have both a Camosun instructor and High School teacher.  You will receive high school credits and college credits. Students wishing to have access to College courses through SIP must ensure pre-requisites are met and course seats are available. Courses will only run if there are enough registrants.

Please Note: Students who wish to register for a dual credit course will be called to a meeting with the Career Centre Staff for the application package.

Camosun Dual Credit Courses at Belmont – Commonly asked Questions

1.  How do students formally register for Dual Credit courses?

Students begin by choosing the Dual Credit (DC) courses they want on the school course selection sheets during the month of February. (2 maximum in same pathway – see course handbook)

After course selection is complete in March the Career Centre staff will review student course requests to determine if students are qualified to take the DC courses they have chosen. Once student records have been reviewed for pre-requisites students will be sent application forms via email.

These application forms must be completed and submitted as soon as possible as there are limited seats available and they are given on a first come, first served basis.

Depending on the situation with the pandemic, students may be called to information meetings or meetings may be organized online.

2.  What are the pre-requisites/co-requisites and how are they scheduled?

The DC courses all have required pre-requisite courses. These are courses that the student must have successfully completed before taking the DC course. The most common pre-requisite course is English 12. The way that these pre-requisites are met is by taking one of three approaches.

a )  We will schedule the pre-requisite (English 12, Pre-Cal 12) before the DC course.
b) When the course can’t be scheduled before the DC course we will schedule it to take place concurrently or at the same time. We call this a co-requisite.

We have experienced many changes to the school class schedule and will likely face more in the future. We will make the necessary adaptations to students’ class schedules to ensure that they have the pre/co requisites that they require.

c) We have other options available such as assessment tests but we only use these as a last resort.

Students do not need to worry about scheduling their timetables. The Career Centre team will work in conjunction with their counsellor to do that for them. However, if you see a discrepancy on the timetable please notify the Career Centre.

3.  Meeting the pre-requisite standards

The marks required for the pre-requisite courses are clearly defined by Camosun. English 12 requires a grade of 60%. Pre-Calculus 12 requires a grade of 73%. The pre-requisites for each course are listed in the course handbook.

The goal with Dual Credit is that we want students to achieve and experience success in these courses. Therefore, before students are registered in a Dual Credit course at Camosun, their transcript from years prior is evaluated to determine the likelihood of success. If students have a letter grade of 86% or higher in Grade 11 English they will have no problem achieving 60% in English 12.

If students have 86% or higher in Pre-Calculus 11 they are likely to achieve 73% in Pre-Calculus 12.

4.  What happens if students don’t meet the pre-requisite requirements?

They will be withdrawn from the Dual Credit course before it begins so that they can choose another course.
