Congratulations to Bernardo del Castillo Eckermann a Grade 11 student who represented Belmont and Langford at the BC Youth Parliament in Victoria, Salt Spring Island and in Revelstoke. Here is an excerpt of Bernardo's experience. ‘I'm Bernardo del Castillo Eckermann. For the last three years I've just been fascinated by politics. I just love it, the debates, campaigns, ideologies... it's all so amazing to me. And the fact that I could make a difference to my community made me want to follow this career. So by the end of 2016, I decided to start working on it. I went to talk to Mrs. Nicholson, the career center lady at my school, she and Mr. Miller gave me incredible support. They made me believe that I could achieve my dream. So I joined the British Columbia Youth Parliament, representing Langford. It was just an amazing experience, I got to see closely how a parliamentary life is, I made incredible friends, and it only made my dream of becoming a politician stronger. I want to be a politician because I want to contribute to my community, I want their voice be heard and their problems fixed. I love Langford and I believe we deserve to have someone looking out for us. I think that our community should have a stronger voice than the party's. Since that session at the British Columbia Youth Parliament in Victoria, I have also been to the Vancouver Island Youth Parliament in Salt Spring Island and to the Canadian High School Modeling United Nations in Vancouver and in May I'll be going to the Kooteney Youth Parliament in Revelstoke. My school has being supporting me both financially and emotionally, but I like to think that they are making an investment, so that in the future they will have someone capable, dedicated and passionate about our community representing them. All I have to say is thank you so much Belmont!’

T.A.S.K. BOATS ROCK !
Belmont TASK students built four welded aluminum row boats over the course of three weeks. Under the direction of Camosun College sheet metal instructor Brian Coey, TASK students fabricated some boat parts at Camosun College, but most of the students’ work was done at Edward Milne Community School. The TASK students celebrated the completion of the boats by having a lasagna lunch and by testing the boats at Langford Lake on Friday, December 12th. Not only did the boats prove to be fully watertight, but the students enjoyed a wonderful sunny afternoon of paddling at the lake.
Joining and supporting the testing and launching of the boats were Brian Coey, Donavon Harris and Christian Allen (Camosun instructors), Don Cameron (Camosun Transition Coordinator), Rodger Hargreaves (SD 62 Career Coordinator), Olivia Hyde (Belmont Work Experience Coordinator), Nadine Nicholson (Belmont Career Programs Coordinator) and Mrs. Reimer (Liam's mother).
Congratulations and kudos to the TASK students Liam B., Logan C., Jason H., Randy L., Jackson L., Anthony M., Macoy M., Stan P., Austin R.,
Liam R., Cody R., Elliot S., Chris S., Desmond V., and Jarett Z. and also to the Belmont TASK teacher, Ms C. Zimmermann.
Belmont is selling the boats for $1,000 each or "best offer". Each boat was fabricated and welded by a team of students under the direction of Brian Coey, a Camosun College ticketed sheet metal instructor. The all-welded boats are 8' long and 45" wide, built out of 0.100" thick,
5052 aluminum and have foam in the seats for floatation.
If you are interested in purchasing a boat please contact Corinna Zimmermann, Belmont TASK teacher at 250-882-4342 or Mike Huck, Vice Principal, Belmont Secondary School at 250-478-5501 ex 307.
